Repair Credit Report: How To Remove Damaging Information

Many people receive a copy of their credit report and find errors on it. These errors include references to late payments which are inaccurate and have lowered their credit report score. Perhaps, the same thing happened to you and you feel shock and anger about what you are seeing. Take a few minutes to calm down. You can fix these errors and negative references. It is easy to repair a credit report and get all the negative items removed without resorting to using a company which promises you to help remove the damaging information.

You first thing you need to do when you find any errors or negative items on your credit report is to dispute them with the company that has produced the document. First, take a copy of the credit report score and circle all those items which you think are false. Next prepare a letter to send to the reporting agency and explain which items you are disputing and ask them to begin an investigation into them, and help them to get them resolved. Also if you happen to have paperwork to support your disputes then send copies, not originals of these, with your letter and a copy of the credit report to them.

Once you have the letter written and all the proper paperwork attached, then send it to them by registered mail. Someone has to sign for a registered letter before delivery. This means you have proof of receipt if they begin to dispute your claim that you sent it. The proof will show that it was delivered and signed for at their offices. You can imagine these bureaus get tons of mail about disputed credit report scores, so it is important to register your letter.

Also send a similar letter to the creditors who appear on the credit report and whose reporting statements are the ones which you are disagreeing with. As with the letter to the reporting agency, also enclose copies of all matching paperwork. When sending any letters to your creditors ensure that you are sending the letter to the correct address. Sometimes the address you need to send any dispute letters to will be different from the one from the payment address of the company in question.

However if the dispute you have about your credit report involves your personal details, then send a copy of your driver's license as well as a utility bill to provide evidence that verifies where your live.

Once the reporting agency has received all this information they will then begin an investigation and will contact all the creditors you are disputing directly to verify the accuracy of the information that they have. If your creditors cannot prove the disputed entries, then the credit reporting agency must remove them. On completion of the investigation, the reporting agency should then send you an updated copy of the credit report free. This is the most effective and cheapest way for you to repair your credit report.
